With more sailors staying in the military amid a slumping economic recovery, the U.S. Navy is taking the unprecedented step of firing low-ranking petty officers to help rein in spending.

The Navy plans to let go of 3,000 young sailors after economic uncertainty put the service in the unusual position of having a manpower surplus.

Trash Bag Bombs- Lethal Garbage

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department responded to a “fireworks” call

in an alley located in a residential neighborhood and located a

common household trash bag floating a few inches off the ground. The

bag appeared filled with air with a harmless balloon appearance. A

patrol officer punctured the bag with a rake and the bag exploded

causing eye and ear injuries to three patrol officers on scene. It was

determined the device was a “Trash Bag Bomb.”

These devices are becoming frequently made as improvised explosive

devices (IED’s) due to the ease of manufacturing and the availability of instructions on how to

make the devices. Online website, www.anarchistcookbook.com, is one of many websites that

gives instructions on how to make these devices with cheap and accessible chemicals and

During Mardi Gras - Starting February 26 - moving about the French Quarter in New Orleans - especially Bourbon Street - is like being in a seven and a half block long, crowded elevator. Filled with drunks. The only way for a cop to get from place to place in an emergency is to get behind a police horse. They move the crowds out of the way very nicely. One may, however, hear the occasional high-pitched scream - "Ohshitgoddamnhesteppedonmyfoooot!" Pity.

One also meets the odd college twit who wants to ride a police horse. "You don't understand, officer. I'm an equestrian." He is then - it's almost always male - told what he really is, and is gently shoved back into the ranks of the milling crowd.

Above is a photo from the New Orleans Times Picayune, and displays some of the horses. I've no idea who the guy on the bicycle is. Maybe he's trying to get out of the way before he hears multiple voices shout, "CHARGE!"

The government put a long sand berm along the beach, said berm being about 7 feet high. Annoying. They thought oil was going to overtake the beach and the island. Didn't happen. The bad publicity did in fact almost destroy island businesses, but the oil thing did little damage.

If you need a vacation and don't really want to hock the house and the car, try Dauphin Island. A long (for America) history of conflict and interest. Friendly people and lots of seafood. Which I can't eat. Allergic you know. To the seafood.

Some crazy stats about China's disposable chopsticks usage, from the article and some extra research, below:

China's population goes through roughly 45 billion pairs of disposable chopsticks a year - that's 130 million pairs a day.
To keep up with this demand, 100 acres of trees - 100 American football fields worth - are felled every day. That means that one acre of trees gets cut down to make chopsticks every 15 minutes.
That works out to 16 million to 25 million felled trees a year.
Usually, these chopsticks are made from birch or poplar (instead of the much more renewable bamboo) to save money. It takes 30 to 40 years for one birch tree to mature.
In 2006, the Chinese government imposed a 5% consumption tax and a 30% price increase on chopsticks. Apparently, the only people this initiative really stopped from using disposable chopsticks were some Japanese people.
Hygeine worries are a silly reason to use disposable chopsticks: Apparently nearly half of companies offering sterilized tableware in Beijing are unqualified, which means "Unhygienic dishwashing, no sterilization, lingering viruses and detergent residues are all hiding under a thin layer of transparent plastic at city restaurants."

So yeah, from now on I'm bringing my own.

As a child, Gernsback discovered American astronomer Percival Lowell’s writings about canals on Mars, inspiring his love of amazing stories.

Three years after moving to the United States in 1905, Gernsback published a magazine for amateur radio enthusiasts. He then became fascinated with 18th-century adventurer Baron Munchausen and wrote a series of fantastical tales including “Munchausen on the Moon” (1915) and “Munchausen Departs for the Planet Mars” (1915).

After publishing an hugely successful all-fiction issue of his Science and Invention magazine, Gernsback in 1926 poured his passion for science, fantasy, pulp fiction and profits into the debut issue of Amazing Stories.

To hype the new magazine, which included reprinted stories by Jules Verne and H.G. Wells along with new work by H.P. Lovecraft and J.R. R. Tolkien, Gernsback came up with the category of “scientifiction.” He later improved on the term by inventing the phrase “science fiction.”

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said whistleblower website WikiLeaks is morally "guilty" for its decision to release nearly 80,000 secret military documents pertaining to the Afghanistan war.

Speaking on the Sunday news shows, Gates and Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, expressed concern about the potential damage the massive leak could do, including putting Afghan informants in harm's way.

"My attitude on this is that there are two areas of culpability. One is legal culpability. And that's up to the Justice Department and others. That's not my arena. But there's also a moral culpability. And that's where I think the verdict is guilty on WikiLeaks," Gates said on ABC's"This Week." "They have put this out without any regard whatsoever for the consequences."

Gates said he was "mortified" and "appalled" by the release. He said the need to protect sources is "sacrosanct" and that WikiLeaks showed "no sense of responsibility."

Two multinational corporations that have earned millions of dollars in U.S. government contracts are conducting business with Iran in violation of the recently signed sanctions law, according to an Iran watchdog group that has provided its research to FoxNews.com.

United Against Nuclear Iran, a non-profit devoted to monitoring the rogue nation, claims that the Danish shipping giant Maersk and Komatsu, a Japanese firm that specializes in construction equipment manufacturing, are flouting U.S. law by continuing to do business in Iran.

The group sent a letter this week detailing its allegations to the CEOs of both companies, as well as Defense Secretary Robert Gates. The Pentagon was notified because the bulk of the firms' government contracts were with the Defense Department.

Komatsu denied the charges; Maersk said the company was reviewing the new sanctions law.

The image to the left, from BING, is not the car in question, I assume that pic is of an older model, but about the same size. The new one looks really neat. Still in all, I do wonder what Bubba, driving an 18 wheel WalMart truck might do to one if he happened to thump into it on the Interstate.

The car is safer, the article says, than motorcycles. I'll buy that. Motorcycles have the glide characteristics of footlockers.

When Sean Harrington entered his freshman year at Arlington High School, he noticed something peculiar: There were no American flags in the classrooms, and no one recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

So Harrington enlisted the aid of his fellow students, and now, three years later, they have succeeded in getting flags installed in the classrooms. But the pledge still will not be recited.

The Arlington, Mass., school committee has rejected the 17-year-old's request to allow students to voluntarily recite the Pledge of Allegiance, because some educators are concerned that it would be hard to find teachers willing to recite it, according to a report in the Arlington Patch.

Harrington had presented school officials with a petition signed by 700 people, along with letters of support from lawmakers including Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., and Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn.

But the request to have the pledge recited failed when the committee's vote ended in a 3-3 tie.

I can think of NO reason this school, or for that matter the state, still receive Federal funds. I would guess there are not enough people in the Federal government with balls.

Then, the employers will not only face jail for hiring these beauties, but will have to pay full wages and benefits.

Federal environmental laws are handcuffing U.S. Border Patrol agents to a foot-and-horseback strategy as they try to battle Mexican drug cartels and illegal immigrants who are turning wide swaths of America's border with Mexico into a virtual no-man's land.

Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah, ranking Republican on the House Parks and Public Lands Subcommittee, said the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge in southern Arizona -- part of which was closed in 2006 because it was considered too dangerous for Americans to visit -- is just the tip of the iceberg.

He said there's plenty of other parkland along the border that's either closed to the public or is considered too dangerous because of concern about drug gangs, human smugglers and illegal immigrants, and that the problem is getting worse.

"You travel here in America at your own risk," Bishop told FoxNews.com.

The reason the parkland along the border has become so hazardous, Bishop said, is because environmental regulations restrict Border Patrol from using vehicles to patrol in those areas -- except in special circumstances. In turn, he said, drug cartels are being funneled into those swaths as immigration agents get tougher patrolling private land.

Some poo-poo brained dolt(s) is/are making parts of America unavailable to Americans and causing Border Patrol officers to put themselves at even more risk than usual. Let anyone just tuning in be aware of Larry B.Lambert's book, WHITE POWDER. This fictionalized account of Special Forces and Intelligence officers in the Laos of the early sixties has been generating interest and selling well through Amazon.com.

Southeast Asia at the time of this combat/love story was a goat rope if one ever existed. The U.S., Communist China and their sycophants were trying to plug the holes in the trail of heroine traffic and win hearts and minds. Or, on the part of some, tear out hearts and deaden minds.

Today is Mardi Gras Day. Well over a million people will be crowding the streets of New Orleans, and surrounding cities. When I was still in the police business, I had half of Bourbon Street for Mardi Gras (on my watch anyway). The crowds were so thick and so loud that one could not see or hear beyond the reach of an arm. It was like being in a seven and a half block long, crowded elevator - filled with drunks. The overwhelming stench of spilled beer and dried urine affects only the sober.

One of these days some terrorist mope is going to see the chance to "make a statement" by killing lots of people, packed in crowds like sardines in a can. Panic may be only a day away. In the meantime, party on.

Employer told not to post advert for 'reliable' workers because it discriminates against 'unreliable' applicants

When it comes to hiring staff, there are plenty of legal pitfalls employers need to watch out for these days.

So recruitment agency boss Nicole Mamo was especially careful to ensure her advert for hospital workers did not offend on grounds of race, age or sexual orientation.

However, she hadn't reckoned on discriminating against a wholly different section of the community - the completely useless.

When she ran the ad past a job centre, she was told she couldn't ask for 'reliable' and 'hard-working' applicants because it could be offensive to unreliable people.

'In my 15 years in recruitment I haven't heard anything so ridiculous,' Mrs Mamo said yesterday.

'If the matter wasn't so serious I would be laughing out loud.
'Unfortunately it's extremely alarming. I need people who are hardworking and reliable - and I am pleased to discriminate in that way. If they're not then I really can't use them. The reputation of my business is on the line.

'Even the woman at the jobcentre agreed it was ridiculous but explained it was policy because they could get sued for being dicriminatory against unreliable people.

'She told me they'd had lots of problems with people taking them to court for adverts stating something like "would suit school leaver".'

Mrs Mamo, 48, of Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, runs Devonwood Recruitment, which supplies hundreds of cleaners, caterers and porters to hospitals across the country.

She filed the advert for a £5.80-an-hour domestic cleaner at a hospital in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, through the Jobcentre Plus online service last Thursday.

However, when she rang the nearest branch in Thetford, Norfolk, to make sure details would be available to jobseekers who turned up in person, she was transferred to a woman who said the wording was unacceptable.

Mrs Mamo, a divorced mother of two, added: 'I had to battle to have "must speak English", which they also said was discriminatory.

'In the end, I had to write "must speak English due to health and safety reasons" because they're dealing with hazardous materials.'

The diktat was widely criticised yesterday. A spokesman for the Campaign Against Political Correctness said: 'This is absolutely ridiculous.

'Of course people want reliable workers and employers should be able to ask for them. If they can't advertise for what they want then the system is broken.'

The Equality and Human Rights Commission added: 'This is in no way in breach of any discrimination law.

'Mrs Mamo should consider very unreliable any advice that she may have received implying that this aspect of her advert was discriminatory.'

Yesterday the Department for Work and Pensions said it could not comment on the conversation Mrs Mamo had with the member of staff at Thetford.

However, a spokesman insisted her original advert had run on the Jobcentre Plus website and on computer terminals in branches.

She added: 'Reliability is important to employers and we welcome ads seeking reliable applicants.'

There seems to be great consternation among various groups as to why adequate supplies haven't gotten to Haiti. Am I mistaken, or are these the same leftist swine that screamed and jumped about when President Bush was unable to make rescue supplies appear by magic in New Orleans? Tons of supplies are not easy to move nor are they instantly available, no matter who's the president. The Haitians are about to riot because the US hasn't yet saved them. In other fun news, officers engaged in a high-speed chase and shoot-out which ended when the bad guys ran off the roadway and into a canal. They swam free. The police are asking anyone who had their house/car/covered-wagon shot up to contact police headquarters.

I'm SO glad I'm out of that.

The ACLU has stated that it's not a good idea to stop the repatriation of Yemeni terrorists to Yemen. The ACLU doesn't like it when we hold terrorists instead of turning them loose? To kill again?

I think the goddamn ACLU is violating my rights and those of other Americans who do not wish to have themselves blown up by Arab thugs. What nerve. I guess this is more of YOUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK. One would suppose that their motto is: Let a million Americans die before you violate the rights of one terrorist.
