Surprise, Surprise!

Results from last weekend’s parliamentary election in Afghanistan increasingly appear to be marred byfraud, with a third of the provinces affected -- an outcome that calls into question the U.S. and Afghaneffort to build a legitimategovernment, The New York Times reported Saturday.

Does NO ONE read history?  Has anyone in the government, or the Useless UN, EVER studied ANYTHING about Afghanistan?  At the very least, it might be said that the Afghanis have a long history of switching sides - from minute to minute.

WoFat, your comments made me flash back to my readings on the subject - the German secret agent Wassmuss and his mission to Kabul during the First World War with gold and promises. The Emir became a backer of the Kaiser. Then the British offered more gold and promises and he swung back out of the Axis orbit to back the Allies.

You have to understand the past in order to frame the present in context.

I hate to say that we're wasting our time there. It's a small war and they should be fought with a small footprint, but that's not what we're doing. The Afghans will never embrace Western values and Mohammad Karzai is a manic-depressive on heavy meds. It's a mess.

We are there is strength because obama wanted to talk bad about Bush and Iraq. "Afghanistan is the NEEDED war," or some such drivel. He has NO idea what we're doing there, nor has he a clue on how to fight anything other than a political fight. And kids keep doing a great job and getting shot doing it.

Sad that our youngest and finest need to pay the price for political mistakes.

WoFat, Obama doesn't know WHAT he's doing and I'm often shocked that he manages to do his business in the restroom without assistance -- but I don't know that for sure. It's only speculation on my part.

What I do know for sure is that the weakness the US shows toward Iran only emboldens them and gives them a green light for nuclear war in the Middle East.

Opus, it has been that way since the beginnings of civilized grouping.
